RvJ’s Top 50 Glasto Countdown: #1 Everything Everything

Hello folks,

With exactly 50 DAYS to go until the first chord is strum at the biggest event of the year we thought we might countdown with a daily feature of who to look out for and where to find them. Fine, everyone is going to go to U2 and the rest, but what else is out there..???

Today we look at Ivor Novello nominated and RvJ favourite ‘Everything Everything’. Fresh from a groundbreaking series of UK shows last year,  EE take their unique brand of psychedelic, indie/funk/electro/pop to the John Peel stage on Sunday 26th.

Championed by just about everyone on radio and in the press, and off the back of a truly stunning album it’s surely only a matter of time before they break into the big leagues. I’ve seen them twice, their live show is truly something to behold with a performance as crazy as the lyrics and sound the band are known for.

So for today try out ‘MZ KZ UR BF’ for a taster – and see you there.

Monday Sleep – Goldfrapp – A & E

I didn’t really rate this when it first came out – didn’t feel that Goldfrapp was quite the person that she had been when she first hit the scene. I rediscovered A & E last year, and actually fell in love with it. So here ’tis…

James Vs BBM *NEW MUSIC*- LizzySpit – ‘Talk You Down’

Up n’ coming UK talent Elizabeth Knights-Ward, aka LizzySpit, releases ‘Talk you down’, the eagerly-awaited new single from the 25-year-old London-based Nu-Folk singer-songwriter.

LizzySpit, a nickname given to her in childhood, is more than just another identikit female solo artist with an acoustic guitar and a bag full of angst.  ‘Talk you Down ‘ is a uniquely fragile tale of reflection and realization of a lost love, her truly heartfelt lyrics aiding in a depiction of a sorrowful episode that is something and someone we can all relate all to.

The song’s strength is in its melody, Lizzy’s voice has the ability to sound soft, close and personal one minute, and enigmatically anthemic the next as it breathily soars over its acoustic accompaniment. Kate Bush sensibilities underlined with slight elements of Sade-like soulfulness make LizzySpit’s warm vocal an aural treat to any ear. The song is very much stripped back, but this is just what this story needs.

With a tour of Australia planned later this year, the future’s bright for an artist who provides just that little something different….remember, you heard it here first.

‘Talk you Down’ is available on iTunes now.

Wild Beasts – Albatross

You should all pay attention to the fact that there will be an Exclusive Interview with Wild Beasts on THIS VERY SITE, next week. (in conjunction with BBM magazine) And to help prepare you for that…

One of our favourite bands of last year: Wild Beasts, return with their new, third, album in May.

This is the first taste of what to expect, the excellent, understated,  ‘Albatross’ – it takes a slight deviation from their usual sound, definitely more restrained, but undeniably Wild Beasts.

Also downloadable from their Facebook page – and they’re going on tour to support the album.

The album “Smother” is out on the 9th of May.

Review: Terrorvision, March 3rd, Electric Ballroom

Proving that perseverance is the way forward, Bradford’s finest, Terrorvision stepped back onto the live scene to promote their new album ‘SuperDelux’.

Having been a fan since the mid-90’s, watching them has always been tinged with a form of nostalgia. But there is a reason for this: Terrorvision have an energy, while performing live that is captured only in a siphoned down form when recorded.

A band touring to promote a new album is always an odd event: the crowd want the songs they know and love, the band want to promote the new songs, and turn them into songs the crowd will want next time. Terrorvision pulled this off, seguing the new songs off proper classics which meant the crowd, while not as animated, still enjoyed them.

This was first time I’d seen them in 10 years, and also the first time they’ve toured properly for the first time since 2001. This was a little evident in Tony Wright’s slightly exhausted figure by the end of the gig, but as always, there was no slowing down. It was a classic, energetic Terrorvision performance.

Terrorvision are back, and although their sound may not have moved on, they’re a band you will always enjoy seeing live, because they will always enjoy playing.

Aqualung

It’s been a while, sorry about that.

SO, Aqualung are back! I don’t know if you know Aqualung, but they had a couple of hits around the early part of the century (No, I still can’t get used to writing that) with ‘Brighter Than Sunshine and ‘Strange and Beautiful’, both haunting and understated songs, that were a cut above the other Snow Patrolesque ‘piano-led-high-voiced’ type efforts.

I was routing around spotify the other day, having been reminded of these songs by a friend, and I discovered they’ve brought out a new album this year. I’d never profess to thinking they were one of my favourite bands, but I like them enough to be pleasantly surprised to be glad they’re back.

Their sound is still very distinctive, Matt Hales has one of those voices I love; kind of a Ben Folds / Mr E type vibe, and he’s learnt a lot in the last few years. They’ve always produced hook-laden songs, but this is a new, mature, Happier, Aqualung.

Happy, energetic, hook-driven melodies, with more than a tinge of soul. He’s definitely listened to my statement above as well, he’s now more reminiscient than ever of Ben Folds. Imagine Take That (The Man band) meeting Ben Folds after visiting the Eels. That’s the new album.

Well, mostly. He can still do ‘strange and beautiful’ things with just a piano and a melody: ”Magentic North is a lovely conditioned piece of aural ailk.

I love it.

Here he is playing one of the new songs, Fingertip: (song starts at 0:58)

Buy it, love it.
